Oromo Basic Level 

This course is intended as an introduction to basic Oromo language and cultures, the fundamental communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is for true beginners.  The goal of Oromo basic level is to develop your proficiency while providing you with a context within which to use and practice what you are learning.  Besides learning about the language, we will also be exploring various areas of culture, norm, ethics and beauty of the Oromo nation. Because total immersion in a language is the best way to learn that language, in class we will always use the Oromo words we have learned. The Oromo basic level course seeks to develop in the students the basic linguistic skills, analytical skills, and cultural and literary knowledge which will enable them to appreciate the uniqueness of other cultures and to function in Oromo-speaking communities around the world. Don’t panic if you do not understand everything the instructor says. Another staff is there to respond to any questions related to the language. 

Objectives:

  • Ability to understand spoken Oromo, read a variety of texts written in Oromo and communicate effectively in Oromo orally and in writing. 
  • Appreciation and knowledge of the Oromo-speaking world, cultures, and works of literature. 
  • Ability to respond in culturally appropriate ways to a variety of common situations in the target cultures. 
  • Ability to think and read critically. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
  • Appreciation and knowledge of grammar and linguistic concepts.  
  • Ability to use state-of-the-art technology to access cultural documents and multimedia resources. 
  • Appreciation of diversity and difference. 
  • Awareness of language as a living product of culture and vice versa. 
  • Ability to apply the knowledge and skills learned to situations outside the academic setting. 
  • Knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of the Oromo language.

Instructor

Beekan G. Erena

Beekan has over 10 years’ experience in the Oromo language teaching, writing, training and researching. Currently, he is a part- time student and staff assistant at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He taught the Oromo in 2016 in Harvard’s African Language Program. In 2018 he served as a native speaker consultant in the Harvard linguistics department. He was an adjunct lecturer in literature at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2017. He has published numerous books and articles in his native language, Oromo. Before joining Harvard, he was a Lecturer at Ambo University, Oromia and taught Oromo literature and Folklore. Beekan has earned his BA and MA degree in Oromo Education in 2006 and 2009 from Jimma and Addis Ababa Universities. He studied for his Ph.D. in documentary linguistics and culture at the same University. His study was disrupted because of the political turmoil in the country and he joined Harvard in 2015 as a visiting scholar. Beekan is experienced in higher education and, skilled in E-learning and numerous forms of media and multimedia. He loves to learn new things which inspire him and others to fulfill the dream of the dreamers.
