Effective Technical Writing

Course Length: One Day (8 hours)

Overview

Created with the Instructional Systems Designer in mind, this course will bring immediate improvements to your development-related documents. Write the most concise documents possible using the tips you learn in this course. Real examples will be shared of how miscommunicating with team members, clients, leadership, and subject matter experts (SMEs) can lead to negative consequences, and potential solutions will be discussed. Examples of poor and clear writing will be compared. A grammar and punctuation refresher will be given. Participants will practice using templates to construct proposals, SME meeting minutes, needs analyses, design documents, and evaluations as well as formats for training materials.

Learning Objectives

  1. Correctly identify the audience for which you are writing.
  2. Identify different methods of collecting and organizing documents, then choose the best one using a given template.
  3. Identify correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation on given sentences.
  4. Concisely write a variety of training-related documents using given templates.
  5. Given a checklist, avoid the most common mistakes by careful proofreading.
