Course Description:

Beginning Amharic is an online course aimed to give students the beginning tools to learn the Amharic language. The course gives fundamental spoken and written abilities and the foundation for literacy in the Amharic language.   

  • Students will learn the Amharic alphabet called FIDEL. They will need these Amharic characters to begin to read and write in Amharic.
  • Students will learn basic grammars, theme vocabularies and sentence structure to help assist their conversational ability. 
  • The course is taught both in Latin and Ethiopic scripts.


Course Goals:  

This beginning course is designed to help students develop communicative skills in Amharic through listening, oral speaking, reading and writing in the Amharic language.

This will be achieved through online discussion, practice, and various activities. 

Learning Objectives:

Upon successfully completing this course, students will begin to speak, listen, read, and write in Amharic.  Specifically, students will be able to do the following:

  • Begin to read and write Amharic words using the Fidel.
  • Recognize and describe the Fidel order pattern.  
  • Recognize the Fidel sound represented and its order in the Fidel (syllabary). 
  • Write simple sentences in Amharic.
  • Identify pronouns and use pronouns to learn the verb to be.
  • Change Amharic words from singular to plural.  
  • Apply possession when using words in a sentence.
  • Build words to show definiteness. 
  • Hold basic conversations such as greetings.
  • Identify days of the week and months of the year in Amharic.
  • Students will give direction and describe the weather in Amharic.

Tafessework Gebeyehu

After immigrating to the United States, Tafessework gained a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Studies and a Masters in Educational Technology from the University of Maryland. She began her career in teenage counseling and later moved on to classroom teaching. During her time as an educator, she has taught students ranging from preschool to grade seven, has taught in multiple countries and, has dedicated time to teaching those with special educational needs as well. Currently, Tafessework teaches in the public school system at the elementary school level and as a professor at Howard University where she has built the Amharic curriculum from the ground up. As this is her fourth year at Howard, she has now been teaching Amharic for over seven years in various settings. This has given her a greater appreciation for the value of language and has made her want to make her lessons more accessible to the world. Starting in 2019, Tafessework will be expanding her teaching of the language beyond her classrooms using online technologies. As an advocate for total classroom technology integration and global collaboration awareness in schools and Universities, Tafessework strives to become a global leader and an innovative instrument in classrooms of the 21st century.
